Process Post: Chicken Licken

I thought it's about time that I post the process I used for this illo. It's my entry to the Tomie dePaola contest. You can see my original post here.

I had a lot of fun with Chicken Licken!

Here are the antagonists of the story. I really believe this is what my Chihuahua thinks the squirrels are up to. He finds them very suspicious.

Here you can see the grass and bushes, the characters, the squirrels, the trees, & some of the collage. I painted/collaged everything separately, then assembled them in Photoshop.

I painted all of the characters in acrylic. Notice that part of the turkey feathers aren't on here. I found I needed to adjust the layout after I had assembled all of the pieces, so I used paintbrushes and the clone tool in Photoshop to add feathers.

Here's a close up of the trees which I painted on collaged vintage book pages.

The collage you see in the grass was done in Photoshop. I put the collage scan behind the grass, then changed the opacity of the grass layer.

Spring Fever

My teenager made this little collage for his sweetie for Valentine's Day. There are no romantic people in this family, but maybe he'll break the mold.

This is pretty much the only thing my youngest will do. Period.

I've given up on winter. It is completely MIA. I need me some rain! All of this Spring weather does have me dreaming of my future garden. One thing is for sure, it will contain daisies. I absolutely L-O-V-E daisies. Love! Landscaping is still a low priority around here. We have too many unfun things on the list — fences, copper pipes, a peeling deck. I do hope to plant a few things this year anyway. I need to plant some happiness and sunshine around here.

The Day Lilies originally came from my mom's garden, then were planted in the garden at my last house, and now making an appearance here in my new garden. They're orange, too. Are you sensing a theme here? You can follow my Gardens board on Pinterest. The perfect place for dreaming.

I'm steadily working my way through the third out of six books on gardening. I'm watching a lot of the series Bones. Love it! I hope they have enough seasons to get me through book number six.

A Quick Sketch

I finally had a moment to sketch purely for fun. We watch a lot of golf around here. A lot! Only one of us is interested in golf — my husband. I guess I'm absorbing it anyway ;)

I currently have an art crush on Sophie Blackall. Check out yesterday's post about her here.

Fan Post: Sophie Blackall

I saw this video of one of my favorite illustrators: Sophie Blackall on Etsy TV. What a treat!

I immediately wanted to go out and draw from life, something I've been doing a bit of lately, but really need to do so much more!

Her work is so fun and fresh! Lighthearted!

She also has a wonderful blog 'Drawn from my father's adventures' where she illustrates the colorful stories from his childhood as the child of a spy. What fun!

What a vivid imagination she has! Don't forget to visit her shop, too.

In the Studio

There's a whole lot of work going on around here, but the walls were starting to close in on me, so I had to clear the decks a bit. I've been on a tear around here sorting and organizing. I can actually walk into my kids rooms in the dark without risking serious bodily injury. It's a good thing.

I have a serious 'putting holes in walls' phobia. It takes me years to get around to hanging up art. As a matter of fact, I still haven't installed the door hardware on my kitchen cabinets. It's been almost 3 years. My goal is to complete that job this month. Anyhoo, I finally hung some of the art that's been propped up around my studio.

Over my bookcase. Love my new Kelly Rae Roberts clock, now if only I could tell time ;) To the right is one of my birdhouse frames like the ones for sale in my Etsy shop. You can get yours here.

Here is a favorite print by my friend, Devon. Her garden and her art are amazing. Below is a piece by Cori Dantini.

And another Kelly Rae Roberts piece.

I have two of these shutters to use for display. Not sure where to put them yet. Don't you love the cute calendar by my friend, Elizabeth Caldwell? They're 50% off now!

Before the big reorg, I took time to have a cuddle with my youngest. Of course, the dog had to get in on the action. This reminds me of the book, 'The Napping House'.
