Parenting Miracles and other Amazing Tidbits

My son cleaned off his desk the other day and the dog discovered a new look out post from which to observe his kingdom. He's very busy making sure no birds or squirrels invade. He's not very effective, since he's afraid of these critters.

When he stands on two legs, he reminds me of King Julian from Madagascar. I'm waiting for him to shake his booty ;-)

It's such a new and wonderful thing when a child of mine, especially this one, sits down and works on his homework without any begging, bribing, or crying. (Yes, I admit, I've cried a lot over this subject.)

And look at this! Be still my heart! A boy enjoying a book without being forced to read said book? It's such a rare occurrence, that I had to document it for posterity. He's reading his new favorite series by Jarrett J. Krosoczka called Lunch Lady.

I love this painting about hope and change. It's now hanging in my family room.

I'm re-photographing some of the things in my shop. In addition, I'm now printing on a beautiful paper from Epson. Yum! Why didn't I do this before?

I am loving this photo from a semi custom collage portrait client of the collage I made for her!

Speaking of paintings, I fell in love with this shiny red cabinet. It's over 8' long and looks like a collage! I have the perfect spot for it! Of course, I'd have to repaint the 16' high red wall to match the other walls, and I'd have to save up some serious money. It's almost $2000! Maybe no one else will want it and they'll slash the price 75%. It could happen, right? Now, how do I get Hubby to repaint the wall?

Disclosure: All links, except to my own sites, are affiliate links. Please click so I can buy that shiny new cabinet! Thanks!

Quilting in the Garden

I adore pumpkins!

I finally went to Quilting in the Garden at Alden Lane Nursery in Livermore. My mom, a quilter, has been going for years. We went with a quilt friend of hers. Alden Lane is the most beautiful nursery!!! I enjoyed having a day with my mom. We had lunch with some of her quilting friends. It was a great day!

I love the way they displayed the quilts! It was such a beautiful combination of flowers, plants, and quilts.

A bed of flowers! How clever!
I heart 1930's fabrics

This canopy of fabric swatches is so beautiful! It's in the window of In Between Stitches in Livermore.
Great shop!

You might have noticed that I've been tweaking my blog a bit. I've also added some affiliate links including Kelly Rae Roberts new ebook, The Whole Shebang. I just finished reading it and it is wonderful. I am currently implementing her many suggestions. You can also visit my Amazon recommendations. I have an extensive library of books I love. Check out the business, illustration, craft, and mommy books I can't live without. Of course, I had to include a link to Tara Reed's tele-seminars and ebooks. I've learned so much from her! I hope you find these helpful.

Hello Fall!

Dancing with Leaves

I'm feeling a bit under the weather, so it's just a quick post for me. Fall is my favorite season, so I knew I wanted to do a sketch that celebrated it. I have more in mind, so it may turn into a series.

Fun Times at the Festival

Our annual church Festival was last weekend. This is a picture of my kids being tossed around like lettuce in a salad spinner. I'm told this is great fun.

Apparently, fun can only be had by being upside and flying high.

Sketches

My little pup sleeping in a heap of bean bag chairs.

I'm sketching a lot lately. It feels so good. This guy may or may not be part of a new winter collection.
There's nothing better than a cozy sweater!

Sketchbook Project — Gigi

Here's another page from my Sketchbook. My sketchbook themee is a 'Day in a Life' and it will show all of what I'm going through as an artist. So far, unfortunately, that includes the good, the bad, and the ugly (mostly ugly). I'm hoping some more good shows up soon. This sketch book will show a lot of me just drawing. That's not always pretty, but hopefully, it'll get better and easier as I go along. For better or worse, it'll all be showcased in this book. Gulp!

On a whim, I decided to color this with color pencil. It smeared the drawing a bit. Live and learn. I'm working really hard not to over think this project. The point, for me, is to have fun and not to worry so much about the final product. That's taking a lot of discipline so far.

'New' Old Work and an Interview

I've been experimenting a lot around here. Mostly with so-so results. I'm still feeling very much in flux. Nothing feels right or comfortable. It's a bit unsettling after so many years of knowing just what to do, but even that doesn't feel quite right. This illustration has had so many iterations, one of which you can see here.

I'm revamping my children's book portfolio for an SCBWI conference tomorrow. I worked for a couple of weeks on something I've had in my head for years. I'm not loving it. Such a disappointment, but that's how it goes. I'm letting it go for now. Now what? I still need new work for the portfolio! I started trolling older art that was ok, but not quite there. I revamped a couple of things. See the Crickets here (I've changed them 3 times since I first posted them). Oh my, I think they're actually grasshoppers. Brain's on overload!

Anyhoo—I gave this guy a new car, but he needed a background. I came up with an idea I love, but stumbled upon this idea this morning. I'm liking it. Who knows what I'll think tomorrow, but for today, I'm happy!

I was interviewed by Alyice Edrich over on EmptyEasel.com

Illustration Friday — Dessert

Just a little sweetness for Illustration Friday. Happy Wednesday!

Grasshoppers

I finally finished this illo. I wasn't happy with the original foreground and background, so I cropped it out & added some collage elements. I'm pretty happy with it right now. I'm busy getting ready for the NorCal SCBWI Illustrator's Day on Saturday. I'm not sure if I can finish everything I'm planning to do before then, but I'm going to try!
